The Nutrition Gap: Hunger in the Heart of the Drought

As of February 12, 2026, the convergence of water scarcity and failed harvests has created a nutrition emergency. With the 2025 "short rains" delivering only 30–60% of the expected moisture, livestock—the primary source of milk and income for pastoralists—are perishing in record numbers. This has left over 810,000 children and 104,000 pregnant women in the ASAL regions facing acute malnutrition. When the water stops flowing, the food system collapses shortly after.

Key Program Interventions

  • Immunization & Health Checks: We are integrating nutritional screenings into our mobile health units. Every child receiving a vaccination is also screened for "wasting" and "stunting," ensuring that medical and nutritional aid are delivered as a single life-saving package.

  • Nutrition Programs: We provide High-Energy Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) and specialized supplements to families in the Mandera Triangle and Marsabit. These programs are critical for the 2.5 million Kenyans currently at risk of severe hunger.

  • Child Protection & Psychosocial Support: Resource-based conflicts over grazing land are increasing. We provide counseling and safe spaces for families displaced by drought-related tensions, ensuring that children are protected from the social fallout of the food crisis.

  • Adolescent Engagement & Leadership: We are training youth in Climate-Smart Agriculture. Using water from our solar boreholes, these young leaders manage community kitchen gardens, providing a sustainable source of vegetables even when traditional rain-fed crops fail.

  • Community & Caregiver Involvement: We hold cooking demonstrations and hygiene workshops for mothers. By teaching dietary diversification and safe food preparation with limited water, we empower caregivers to maximize the nutritional value of available food rations.

  • Family Support Systems: Our teams use Real-Time Nutrition Tracking. By monitoring local market prices and livestock health data, we can predict food shortages weeks in advance and mobilize relief supplies before a "Stressed" community slips into a "Crisis" phase.

Building Sustainable Healthcare

True health cannot be achieved without food security, and food security is impossible without water. Our long-term strategy involves building Solar-Irrigated Hubs around our deep-well boreholes. These hubs provide enough water for both domestic use and small-scale farming, creating a "Green Oasis" that shields the community from the next climate shock. We are moving from emergency feeding to permanent food sovereignty.
