Kenya’s 2026 Water Emergency: The State of the Crisis

As of February 12, 2026, Kenya is facing a historic climate emergency. Following the catastrophic failure of the 2025 "short rains," the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) has placed Mandera, Wajir, Kwale, and Kilifi in the critical "Alarm" phase. Over 3.3 million people are currently facing acute food and water insecurity—a number projected to climb to 3.6 million by June. This is not just a seasonal shortage; it is a systemic collapse of water access that demands an immediate, structural response.

Key Program Interventions

  • Immunization & Health Checks: We are deploying rapid-response mobile clinics to provide routine vaccinations, deworming, and Vitamin A supplementation. Our priority is stopping the surge of water-borne diseases in the Mandera Triangle and Turkana, where current outbreaks are 4x higher than the five-year average.

  • Nutrition Programs: Targeted feeding schemes for 810,000 children and 104,000 pregnant women suffering from acute malnutrition. By integrating water access with nutrition, we ensure that therapeutic foods are effective and that recovery is permanent.

  • Child Protection & Psychosocial Support: By drilling boreholes directly in village centers, we eliminate the dangerous 12km "Water Walk." This keeps children safe from wildlife attacks and exploitation, while providing safe spaces and counseling for those displaced by drought.

  • Adolescent Engagement & Leadership: We are training the next generation in Samburu and Marsabit through vocational workshops and digital literacy. These youth-led water committees are trained to manage and maintain our solar-powered infrastructure for long-term community resilience.

  • Community & Caregiver Involvement: We provide parenting classes and hygiene forums to help families manage the immense stress of the drought. Local leaders are empowered to advocate for water rights, ensuring that every borehole remains a community-owned asset.

  • Family Support Systems: Every project is monitored via digital dashboards. By tracking health and nutrition data at the household level, we can catch spikes in vulnerability early and scale our successful models to neighboring sub-counties before they hit the "Emergency" phase.

Building Sustainable Healthcare

Beyond immediate emergency aid, we are strengthening the backbone of rural healthcare. We prioritize drilling 900ft solar-powered boreholes that connect directly to maternity clinics and schools. By providing a permanent, drought-proof water source, we ensure that healthcare remains functional even when the rivers run dry, building a resilient system that will serve these communities for generations.
