The Hidden Toll: Protection and Safety in the Shadows of Drought
As of February 12, 2026, the water crisis in Kenya has created a secondary emergency: a surge in protection risks for the most vulnerable. With local water pans evaporated, the "Long Walk" has extended into unfamiliar, dangerous territories. For a child in Marsabit or Tana River, the search for water is no longer just a chore—it is a journey through high-risk zones where the threat of wildlife attacks, physical exhaustion, and exploitation looms large.
Key Program Interventions
Immunization & Health Checks: Our mobile units provide trauma-informed care. Beyond physical vaccinations, we conduct "Safety Screenings" to identify children showing signs of extreme physical strain or psychological distress caused by the displacement of their families.
Nutrition Programs: We establish "Safe-Water Hubs" that serve as distribution points for nutritional supplements. By centering these services in protected, well-lit community areas, we ensure mothers and children don't have to travel to isolated areas to receive life-saving food.
Child Protection & Psychosocial Support: We have established "Dignity Centers" near our solar boreholes. These are supervised spaces where children can rest and receive counseling while their caregivers collect water, ensuring they are never left unattended in high-risk migration corridors.
Adolescent Engagement & Leadership: We empower young adults as "Safety Ambassadors." They are trained to map safe routes to water points and use mobile reporting tools to alert the community and local authorities about emerging risks or wildlife sightings.
Community & Caregiver Involvement: We facilitate community-led "Protection Committees." By involving local elders and religious leaders, we reinforce traditional safety nets and ensure that child protection is a shared responsibility during times of scarcity.
Family Support Systems: Our Protection Hotline & Digital Map allows families to report incidents in real-time. This data helps us coordinate with local security and wildlife services to secure the paths between villages and our 900ft deep-well boreholes.
Building Sustainable Healthcare
Safety is the foundation of health. We aren't just building wells; we are building Safe Zones. Every borehole we drill is equipped with solar-powered perimeter lighting and is located within 1km of a school or clinic. By shortening the distance to water, we effectively eliminate the hours of vulnerability that children face daily. We are securing the future by protecting the present.
